New Zealand pressed Records(7" & LP)-
Advice & Gallery.

Records were pressed in New Zealand until 1987 when the last factory (EMI)closed (and the presses were dumped in the sea!). From then on records were made in Australia. Most labels or rear record sleeves will have "Made in New Zealand". The labels which are difficult to identify are Warner/Sire (WEA) or Mercury (Phonogram) as these often don't mention the country of manufacture.

Singles-7": Much like in the UK and USA, most New Zealand made singles from the 1950's until the late 70's only came in die-cut paper "company sleeves".
From the late 1970's onward, picture sleeves became more common
Unlike the Europe and Japan, they did not have specially made picture sleeves.
See this page for a selection of New Zealand company sleeves.

Albums: Until 1972, most New Zealand made LP sleeves were of the "flipback" variety. This is where the laminated front cover folds (or flips) over the back and is then glued leaving a easily seen ridge. From 1972 on LP sleeves were glued in the regular way where the front folds inside the back before gluing. Some LP's released in 1972 will have both methods.
